Repeatability: creating a successful business model

A successful business model cuts through the complexity by focusing on a handful of core principles. Nike adheres to four interlocking capabilities: brand management, athlete partnerships, award-winning design and use of materials, and an efficient supply chain from Asia.

Three design principles

The authors have identified three design principles: a well-differentiated core, systems for closed-loop learning, and clear non-negotiables in terms of behaviour. The supply chain of food producer Olam in Singapore runs right up to the gates of the farmer supplying it. Olam expects all its managers to spend time living in rural supply areas – even city slickers with an MBA.
