Working Wisdom: quote about employees and work

Albert Einstein

“The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.”

Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. In his lifetime, Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers and more than 150 non-scientific works.

This quote is one of several attributed to Einstein about formal education, with others including “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school”, and “It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education”.

In this era of Industry 4.0, there is much discussion about the mismatch between the current education system and which knowledge and competencies professionals need in practice. Businesses also have a role to play in ensuring that employees have the right skills for the future by providing relevant training and encouraging lifelong learning.
