Working Wisdom: quote about employees and work

Simon Sinek

“You don’t hire for skills, you hire for attitude. You can always teach skills.”

Simon Sinek (born 9 October 1973) is a British-American author, motivational speaker and organizational consultant. He began his career at the New York advertising agencies Euro RSCG and Ogilvy & Mather, and subsequently launched his own business. His goal is to help build a world in which the vast majority of people wake up every single day feeling inspired, feel safe at work and feel fulfilled at the end of the day. In line with this, he is leading a movement to inspire people to do the things that inspire them.

Sinek has written five books related to this topic, including Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action (2009), from which this quote is taken, and he popularized the concept of ‘why’ in his first TED Talk in the same year. His concept is based on the belief that great companies don’t hire skilled people and motivate them; they hire already motivated people and inspire them – people are either motivated or they are not. People with the right mindset can then develop the relevant skills as necessary. This is a potentially important consideration for businesses when looking to recruit new employees, particularly in this era of talent shortage.
