Working Wisdom: quote about business & globalization

Jerry Maguire

“Show me the MONEY!!!”

The storyline of the romantic comedy Jerry Maguire, produced and directed by Cameron Crowe and released in the USA in December 1996, is inspired by real-life sports agent Leigh Steinberg. The film revolves around the sports agent called Jerry Maguire (played by Tom Cruise) who has a moral epiphany about perceived dishonesty in the sports management business. He is keen to work with fewer clients so as to produce better quality. However, this insight results in him being fired. He decides to put his new philosophy to the test as an independent agent, with the only athlete who stays with him (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.) and his former secretary (played by Renée Zellweger). This quote from the film comes when client Rod Tidwell (Gooding) colourfully expresses his unhappiness with his existing contract during a phone conversation, and insists that Maguire screams it back at him. The phrase ‘Show me the money!’ sums up the essence of sales forecasting; organizations need to know where their revenue is going to come from, and when.
