Barack Obama (born 4 August 1961) is an American politician who served as the 44^th president of the USA from January 2009 until January 2017. After studying at Harvard Law School he became a civil rights attorney and professor, teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 until 2004 and was the junior United States Senator for Illinois from 2005 to 2008.

This quote comes from a speech he made as Senator in Berlin, Germany, during his presidential campaign in 2008. In late 2009, Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”. During his second term in office he focused heavily on two major trade agreements – the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) – both of which have so far failed to come to fruition.
